KLD is taking a proactive stance on environmental sustainability by implementing a set of Energy and Resource Conservation Guidelines. These measures aim to meet national energy reduction targets while fostering a culture of collective responsibility among students, faculty, and staff. At the heart of this strategy is the "24°C Rule," which mandates that all air-conditioning units be strictly maintained at exactly 24 degrees Celsius to optimize power consumption without sacrificing comfort.
To further reduce the load on cooling systems, KLD has established strict containment protocols requiring all doors and windows to remain closed during air-conditioning units operation. In rooms equipped with multiple units, smart HVAC management now calls for a reduction of operating units by 25 to 50 percent. Lighting efficiency is also a major focus, as classrooms and offices are directed to use natural sunlight and deactivate LED lights whenever ambient light is sufficient. Hallway lighting has been capped at 50 percent capacity, and stairwell lights now operate on a strict power cycle from 5:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Beyond electricity, KLD is introducing innovative logistics to manage physical resources and water usage. The new "Odd-Even Elevator Program" programs elevators to service specific floors, effectively reducing energy-intensive stops and mechanical wear. Complementing this is the "Stairs-First Initiative," which encourages the community to use stairwells when traveling between the first and third levels to promote physical wellness alongside energy savings. A "Zero-Waste" water policy has also been enacted, requiring users to ensure faucets are tightly closed and to report any leaks immediately to the maintenance team.
Recent data show these policies are backed by operational maintenance. The Facilities Engineering and Management Unit reported significant progress as of April 6, 2026, having completed the cleaning of 80 AC units in Building 1 and 50 units in Building 2. Additionally, 14 units in Building 1 were recently repaired to ensure peak efficiency. These efforts are monitored through daily and nightly roving inspections by security personnel and housekeeping to ensure all lights and devices are deactivated in unoccupied spaces. This combined approach of strict guidelines and active maintenance positions KLD as a leader in campus-wide resource conservation.
